How to wear a face mask: Simple tips to help you put on and remove your mask safely

So you’re ready to start using face masks. But what is the correct way to put a mask on and take it off? There are a few things you may not be aware of that you need to consider, so here’s our quick guide to using your mask safely and hygienically.

What is a face mask?

Face masks are face coverings that help prevent the spread of airborne infections. There are many different types of masks available including KN95, N95, FFP and 3 ply. Some masks offer one-way protection, while others provide two-way protection. Visit the product section of our website for more information that will help you choose the right mask for you.

How does a face mask help prevent the spread of infection?

When you talk, cough or sneeze, you release tiny droplets into the air that can infect others. Wearing a face mask limits the number of germs you release. If you wear a two-way mask, you can also reduce the risk of inhaling droplets released by others.

How should you put your mask on?

It is important to adopt a set routine to ensure that (a) the mask stays as contamination-free as possible, and (b) you protect yourself and others.

Follow these simple steps to make sure your routine is safe:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer for at least 20 seconds
  • Remove the mask from its packaging
  • Make sure the mask has not been ripped or snagged in transit
  • Identify the top and front of the mask
  • Hold the mask by the ear loops and place a loop around each ear
  • Pull the top of the mask up over your nose
  • Pinch the top of the mask to fit the shape of your nose
  • Pull the bottom of the mask over your mouth and chin
  • Make sure the mask stays over your nose and mouth when you are near others

How should you remove a face mask?

It’s equally important to follow a set routine when you take the mask off:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer
  • Avoid touching the front of the mask
(if you have been near someone who is carrying an infection, this will be the area that is contaminated)
  • Hold both ear loops and gently lift and remove the mask
  • Dispose of the mask in a bin making sure that no one else can touch it
(for example, by putting it in a bag)
  • Clean any surfaces the face mask has touched
  • Wash your hands again with soap and water or hand sanitizer

How often should you change your face mask?

Disposable masks should only be used once then thrown away. You should also remove and replace masks when they become moist with breath, rain, or any kind of water. If you are using washable masks check if there are instructions. We recommend putting them in a washing machine after removal and washing at 60 degrees.
